Never tried an Express III but own an original 10 yr old DTX 2.0. Athough I think 95% of its sounds are perfectly acceptable, my only minor beef is I think the toms fall somewhat shy of "ultra realistic". Its still a great module that has served me quite well over the years but I will probably eventually replace it with a second hand Roland TD-6 (or higher) becuase of this.
Take that critisizm with a grain of salt though because its entirely possible the sounds of Yamaha modules have improved greatly since my DTX. I'd hit a local music store and compare a few units for yourself. A Roland TD-3 may be another alternative to consider. Hard to beat the Express 3 at that price if the bidding doesnt go much higher though.
