XP hangs sometimes while shutdown

Sometimes, when I shutdown, the computer displays the "Windows is shutting down" blue screen and just hangs there and I have to turn it off manually. Wonder why this happens and how to fix it and if this damages my computer in any way? I checked the event list of Windows but there is no log about this.....
