Win2k + SB Live + MIDI......how?

I've been doing audio work for a couple years now, but I've finally decided to delve into MIDI. I have an Alesis DM5 and a Yamaha pf88 that I've tried to get communication with my computer, but to no avail. I'm using one of those single port midi cables and I've fiddled with some of the settings - changing channels on both the computer and the DM5 (the pf88 doesn't have any settings), but I can't get anything to work. What am I doing wrong?

Single port midi ?????
Generally with an SB you should have an adapter with 2 midi pigtails {in & out} and the serial connect on one end to tie to the SB. You then need to select the ins and outs to communicate with midi in and out and not internal synth. With the D5 you will need to use chl. 10 unless you setup the D5 otherwise.
