Which mixer + DAW?

Ok here's the scenario. I'm using Adobe Audition right now as my DAW and a sound card which works for what I'm doing but I would really like to be able to do more than 4 simultaneously tracks to get better micing for drums. I'm looking into the route of mixer + firewire to DAW as the solution. I was looking at the Mackie Onyx 1640 16-Channel Mixer with firewire option but I'm told you're really just paying for the pre-amps. I really would like something with nice preamps that I can run firewire into the DAW and record 8 simultaneous tracks. (we'll say max 10 just to give it headroom for other projects) Any suggestions? I'm looking between the $1000-1500 range. I can't really afford to go much higher than that right now. Any help would be vastly appreciated. Thanks so much as you've guys have been lifesavers in the past!

to clarify a bit I am looking to do independent channel sends so I can have each track seperately recording into the DAW for mixing purposes. I don't want to be married to a mix before I send it to prevent problems later down the line when the other instruments make their way in. I am also up for other solutions than the firewire concept. Any thoughts?

The Mackie Onyx is overkill for this purpose.

Try something like this:

8 channels for 600 bucks. I'm pretty sure you can hook up 2 of these to get 16 channels.

Or this for a bit better quality preamps:

Both are excellent units though. There's more like these out there, but haven't seen any with 12 channels. There's a select couple with 16 channels but they are either crap or too expensive (for your budget).

For $600 you can get an Alesis Multimix 16 which will give you 16 Channels of Simutainius Recording for $600....The Pre"s aren"t as Good as the Onyx but are probably pretty close to the quality of the Firepod and it has 24 Bit converters but can only record at 48000Hz Max which is good for most Purposes....

Pluss it can also be used as a regular analogue Mixer when it isn"t connected to your PC Via Firewire.....

A Friend of mine rescently got one and he is quite happy with it and the recording I have heard that he has done sound quite good....

Just a Thought....

Cheers

I would recommend a mixer with whatever choice you pick. I say this because like Minion said, it can be used for other non-computer related stuff like mobile mixer for recording with eq, pan, impedance converting, small pa, headphone & wedge monitor sends, etc.
