Where do you get VSTi instruments?

I just created an empty folder marked "VSTi instruments"

I want to fill this folder with commercial quality MIDI instrument plugins.

Then I can use my Axion 59 to control these plugins through my Reaper software.

Any advice on where I can get these and what I should look out for? Are there good free ones out there? Site suggestions, forums you like, etc.

Thank you.

You could also get SFZ which is a free soundfont player an do a google search for some decent free soundfonts

SFZ - http://www.project5.com/products/instruments/sfz_player/default.asp

You could also get a sampler and try some free samples

Shortcircuit - http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php

I use most of these myself. I have tried out quite a few free VSTi's and these were my favourites. There are actually 1000's of freeware VSTi's out there and you'll need to try them out for yourself.
Start at the plugin database at KVR http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php and choose the options on the page and off you go!!
Hopefully the ones I've listed will start you off!

there really aren't that many good free vsti's/soundfonts out there. I've tried well over a hundred. There are NO decent pianos, and a good piano that sounds fantastic will be at least 200 bucks. Steinberg the Grand 2 is only 200, and one of the best. I think it beats out Ivory, and DEFINITELY pianoteq, which is a joke. If you're looking for orchestral sounds, you could get GPO for only 200 bucks. VERY nice program. If you want an all around VSTi that is packed with hundreds of instruments, you could get Collosus or Goliath or something.

You could look into soundfonts too. They come with the extension .sf2.
You would have to download the soundfont player VSTi, but it's free.

Cool

I just downloaded the SFZ sound font player and I'm downloading a sound font piano I found on the site you just recommended.

So, does the sound font player split all of the sound fonts out so that they play automatically in the right spots on my midi controller

Thanks again!

:)

Figured it out

The wst25fstein_00sep22-sf2 piano, the first one on the sf2 piano page you sent me to. What a difference? I opened the sf2 player in Reaper and then selected the SF2 file.

It was a little crackly at first and it kept breaking up almost as if someone was continuously picking the needle up off an LP and putting back down. And then I don't know what happened, but now the piano plays beautifully.

Got any other cool sf2s you can recommend?
