when tracking vst instruments such as hypersonic or pro-53 with a midi keyboard (or pc keyboard) what sample rate and bit depth should i use? does it make a difference if i use 16 bit vs 24 bit and 44 k vs 88k?

Use whatever sample rate/bit depth your project is in.

If the VSTi is sample-based...aka...uses built-in WAV samples, then you won't gain any benefit by recording at a higher sample rate. The only reason to do so is to match the sample rate of the rest of the tracks in your project.

If the VSTi is a synth, and it generates sounds, then those sounds will be "generated" at whatever sample rate/bit depth your host (DAW) is using.

In summary, just use whatever sample rate/bit depth your project is in.

why do people use 24 bit when samples such as kick, clap, hi hat, and snares are all 16 bit 44k?

They are not all 16/44,samples and loops come in different formats and recording rates. The samples you are using may be that rate/bit depth.
The higher bit depth/sample rate the more CPU and disk space you will use.As computers advance this is becoming less of an issue. The first response is all you need to know unless you are experiencing computer issues.
