Hi all,

Basically I'm about to splash out on another mic... just wondering about any suggestions! I'll list the mics I've got first. Also, I know this question seems stupid, but how does my mic locker hold up? Good/Crap?

5 x Shure SM57
1 x Shure Beta52
1 x Rode K2
1 x ADK ST Pro
2 x Rode NT5
1 x Sub-kick mic thing (you know, the NS10 in reverse trick)
1 x BSS AR-116 direct box

Thanks all!

The most obvoius holes I find in your cabinet are- a good multi-pattern FET workhorse, and a higher end dynamic or two.
Workhorse mics- Shure KSM44, AKG C414B-ULS, Audiotechnica AT4050
dynamics- Shure SM7B, Electrovoice RE20, Sennheiser MD421, MD441-Richie

Thanks richie,

The ADK ST is actually a multipattern FET, turns out to be quite an all-purpose mic on a lot of sources.

I know a lot of people will hate me for this, but i'm not a massive fan of the c414 on most sources... as for the other sugggestions, thanks! keep 'em coming

Hmmm, not sure how keen I would be on a cheapo ribbon mic... can't imagine it having the same smooth highs as a pricier one. Not that I'm "price-ist"..

Anyone have any experience with cheaper or even mid-priced ribbon mics?

nice thread, composition, i think im gonna do the same thing! but rather than start a new thread...

here is a list of my microphones, what would you suggest i get next. i'm looking most specifically to get a better sound for drums and guitar amp cabinets more than anything:

4 x SM57
1 x AKG D112
1 x AT4040
2 x Rode NT5
2 x Audix D2
1 x MXL 2003
2 x Sennheiser e609

For both composition4 and thexflamesxburn, I'd suggest looking into other things like better preamps or even cables. You both seem to have mics covered well.

i use monster cables. but what preamp would you suggest? keep in mind im on a budget, under $400 would be nice :)
I have a Monster cable, but it broke recently after moderate use. I think they can be replaced for free, which I like, but I'm in the pool that believes cables should not be dispensable! If you ever decide to upgrade, I highly recommend looking at
http://www.martonecustomcables.com/. I have six of their cables and am counting on getting several more. Big ups to them.

I hope that wasn't too much of a hijack... :o

What preamps are you currently using?

I'm using a JLM TMP-8 8 channel pre, and an aphex 107 dual-channel. The TMP-8 is absolutely fantastic... the 107 is okay for some non-critical tracks - so I've got pres covered quite well also.

I've made my own cables using about 200m of canare star-quad LE46S, i think the model no. is... and neutrik connectors.. I try not to go cheap on things, no point getting something that I'll need to replace or upgrade in a year or two (mics, cables, pres etc)

...just a few reasons why you should re-evaluate your impression of "cheapo" ribbon mics...I have 2, and they are outstanding for the cost...none of the annoying "high-frequency bite" that is so much more common in the budget LDC mics...very smooth, and rich sounding...definately worth considering IMHO...

...meanwhile, over at one of the "Pro-Sites", you can read some of the praise, criticisms, and suggestions for modding the "cheapo-ribbon" mics:
