What is Ric Grech doing to the bridge of his bass?

I saw this picture of the bass player from Blind Faith, and was wondering why he has that foam or whatever it is under his strings on the bridge.
Anyone know what he is trying to do? I've just never seen this before.

Its the second picture down.

he`s muting the strings with it. That way he doesnt have to do it with the heel of his palm. It keeps the other strings from vibrating as he is playing and it gives the bass notes a "bump" sound which was popular back then . The early Fender Precision and Jazz basses, as well as many others, had a cover over the Bridge and cover over the neck pickup with a piece of foam on the underside to cut down on vibration of the strings unless they were plucked. ( many early electric bass players played with the same style as one would use for an upright).

Just listened to that album, great bass playing. I hate to say, nice break from Jack Bruce, for Eric Clapton.
