In the end it's the speed of your machine. That little red bar increases with each plug in that your use... Can be somewhat avoided by using FX channels with sends. As tetrafish said, you can increase the buffer for some help, but it will still overload if you use too many plug ins. My computer is old and slow so i had a lot of trouble with this at first too.
