What happens when you exceed the SPL rating?

A little man who is the same nationality as the country where the mic is produced jumps out and spanks you.

Just curious here, not looking to do it. Does it damage the mic, or just give you a nasty sound?

Thanks,
Bryon
Normally, there is no damage, if the excess levels are not too great. Most mics can tolorate SPL levels greater than the rating given, but with increased distortion.

How much more distortion? With a round diaphragm, the distortion doubles for every 6 dB increase over the rated SPL.

If the excursion is too great in a condenser mic, the diaphragm can short out against the back plate and arcing will occur, damaging the diaphragm. With dynamic mics, it is possible to bottom the voice coil, or rip the diaphragm. In ribbons, excess SPL or blowing into the mic can strech the ribbon, causing it to sag or rub against the pole pieces.

When recording music, almost any mic will be safe, as long as it's not being subject to direct air blasts. It may distort, but it probably won't be permanently damaged.

Air blasts are the number 2 killer of mics (humidity is number 1).
