weird guitar micing

i spend most of my recording time experimenting with mic placement for acoustic guitar (mainly gibson J45 and Martin D18). i have two main set ups.

1) typical XY stereo with two NT5's about 2 feet in front of the sound hole.

2) an sm57 on the neck and an NTK on the bridge both within 6 inches.

yesterday, i tried combining the two, i used the XY about 3 feet away from the sound hole, and placed the NTK right inside the XY aimed almost directly at the sound hole. when i mixed i put the stereo tracks hard right and left, and the NTK in mono right in the center. the song was just guitar and vocals and harmonica, normally i wouldn't do this for a song with many more tracks.

does anyone else like using 3 mics for acoustic guitar? any other weird mic set ups that have had good results?

i've use the same setup (w/ different mics) all the time on piano and guitar. its like a quasi- MS pair in a way. It always ends up turning out really well for me

That's what I was going to say (quasMiddle-Side). If you have acsess to a figure of 8 mic, you should give that a try. Works good with drum overheads too.
