Wave files, MP3s and frequencies

I've recorded some stuff at home and I've noticed that even though seperate tracks will run across all the frequencies shown on a graphic equaliser, the final mixdown seems to have extremely dominant low frequencies with barely anything above 350Hz. Yet when I save the mixdown in mp3 rather than wav, the graphic equaliser I'm playing them through shows high, mid and low frequencies being used. It doesn't sound any better than the wav file, but I was just wondering if anyone knew why it happened. Hope that was clear.

Thanks.

base the mixdown on how it sounds and not on how it looks.
let the people who create the algorithms for lossy and lossless encoding worry about what it does.
