I have a newb question.....

I've recorded a song and the volume level is high enough on my monitors but when I test it in my truck cd player the volume level is way too low compared to pro recordings. I try to turn it up in reaper but of course it distorts. Is this because I'm not recording at high enough levels?

No, you can never record too low. Don't make the mistake of recording or mixing your tracks too loud.

If you're comparing it to "pro recordings", those recordings have been mastered. One of the many things done in mastering is to get the overall volume up by using a limiter.

So, while the whole "loud mix" thing is a topic of huge debate, the quick answer to your question is to put your final mix through a limiter to get more volume out of it.
