Very dumb question

I hear everyone saying to plug the preamp into the line in jack on the soundcard. The problem I'm having is that I can't record anything. I get sound coming from my speakers but can't record. Wtf am I doing :( ???
 
Listen to AlChuck, he recently walked me through the same problem(thanks again Al) I had the wrong input active and some things muted that should have been turned on, sounds like you may be doing the same, I got quite frustrated with it so take a deep breath, relax,andgo through the steps to find where your sound is being blocked. Try going to Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Controle>Options>Properties>Recording>Line In then make sure its not muted. Can't guarantee it but thats what solved the same problem for me. Good luck, Dani
 
short version:
Open Volume control
Go to options - properties
select recording
make sure line in is selected
click okay
you get a new recording mixer
select line in.
