Using MOTU 24 mkI for more inputs on my Layla 24

I have a layla24 and will be doing a drum recording session tomorrow.

A friend of mine has a MOTU 24 which works as a standalone digital to analogue converter.

I was thinking to use the optical cable to connect the digital out from the MOTU to the digital in on the Layla (parsing all the analogue signal through).

Will I also need a BNC word-clock connector to keep it in sync?

Anyone done this before or see any problems with why it should work?

The motu mkI stuff is all 20 bit (possibly 16bit)

I tend to only record in 16 bit anyway (or only will be for this recording)
