using automation in PT

Hello,

I'm trying to use automation in PT 7.3.1 to raise/lower volume at parts songs...I use Jeff Strong's very helpful PC recording for Dummies but in this instance following his guidelines hasn't worked for me...

I click pencil tool, click 'write' in the automation but no pencilling is being done when i scribble over the track i want to adjust...

Just another question ...what negative effect might using automation have on the recording..should it be used sparingly?

"write" is a mode of automation that you do while the track is playing back. As it plays back in write mode, you move the fader to write the automation.

to pencil in volume automation, you switch the track over to volume view and use the pencil tool to draw in nodes
