using an ADAT as a converter

I'm ADAT now, wanting to go to comp recording. I was planning on buying a MOTU interface for conversion, but could I just keep the ADAT and use it?

How is this done? Am I just running my signals into the ADAT (from my board) like I was going to record to it, but it just outputs it to the comp converted? Is that right? Optical cable?

Thanks.

I'm on ADAT too.
and I'm gonna use it as a A/D converter.
Just plug my mixers output into analog ins and then run them to my pc through the digital cable and synch the machines with its own cable.
In theory it should work fine.

An ADAT with a MOTU is a great combo with a few wrinkles. You patch it to the MOTU with lightpipe cables. The only problem you can get into is monitoring if you're trying to playback prerecorded tracks through the ADAT while trying to record new ones. The ADAT has to be set to digital input to playback tracks from the computer THROUGH the ADAT which disables the analog inputs. If you're playing back these prerecorded tracks through the MOTU's analog outputs though, this isn't an issue.
