Until I can afford a CPU upgrade, are there any short-term ways I can speed up my PC

Hey, I plan to upgrade my computer when I can afford too but until then are there any changes I can make to the way my computer functions in order to speed it up? The problem I'm having is that when I'm mixing down a midi track into an audio track, there are gaps in the wav. file where the patch from a VST cut out due to my CPU usage exceeding its limits.

What are your PC specs?

Turn off everything in the BIOS that you are not using (serial ports, raid, etc). Then if you can't get to it in the bios, disable unused hardware in device manager. Unplug all USB you dont HAVE to have.

Also disable all the windows visual elements and set it to classic mode.

Total Physical Memory is 256MB
Total Virtual Memory is 2GB

I don't know if thats all u need to hear but I don't know too much about Specs.. :o

specs like processor, processor speed, hard drive manufacturer & size, hard drive speed, memory size (you state 256mb), memory speed, and video should be enough.

For one, you have only 256MB, go get at least a 1GB stick and chunk the 256. Download system spec's

http://www.alexnolan.net/software/sysspec.htm install it, run it, and it should tell you whatever you have in terms of specs

Thanks for the link Mindset! Its Windows XP:

Processor - Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.66 GHz
Speed - 2636.7 MHz
HD manufacturer and size - Dell DV051, 71.4GB, (45.1GB free)
RAM - 247MB
Drive Type - Fixed NTFS

Cant find memory speed and video but hope thats enough?

Get rid of all the porn on your system and do not surf for porn on the net on that machine.

Best advice I can give ya.

Drive around on garbage day. Chances are that you can find a better computer than you have sitting next to a trash can. I'm not kidding or trying to be a smart ass. When some people get a new computer they just toss the old one in the trash.

Do you mean RAM memory or HD Memory?

RAM, he's running only 256mb, clearly not enough. Processor speed should be adequate enough for what your doing, you'll want to eventually upgrade that hard drive to something a little larger, depending on how much you think your going to be using up. Processor isn't top of the line, and that it being a economy chip (Celeron), you eventually could upgrade that, but anyways, memory is what you need.

Its a Dell and was probably loaded with all sorts of garbage programs running in the background sucking up cpu cycles. In the lower right hand corner of your monitor, count the number of little icons there (next to your time). Write down the names of these icon. If you put your mouse cursor over them they will display the name. Let us know what is running. I then can tell you which ones you can get rid of. Some are not so nice and they dont show they are running. Also download spybot and adaware (spyware removers) and install and run. These are both free. There are many other resources you can free up in your pc. But to try and walk you through it would be time consuming. The above mentioned process will be easy.

those would be the instructions in reaper, but likely what ever app you use has some sort of freeze type function to save you some cpu cycles
