Tube Tones

I'm new to the tube market. But I'm picking up an old Vibro Champ and am wondering what i can expect by replacing the tubes. I love the way it sounds now but I'm wondering if there's room for improvement.

Should tubes be replaced regularly or only when they crap out and how do you know when they are "bad"

How often you change tubes will depend on how much you play. Just look at the tubes while your amp is on and see if any of them look dimmer than the others. If one does replace it. I like to replace all of them if one is bad.

Wow I'm so excited! Who said you can't buy happiness! I love my Vibro Champ. Had to run off to work before i could really play it for long but i did check out the specs and then realized how ignorant i really am!

Are the power tubes the big ones or the little ones?
The little ones (power i think) are matched right? These are Fenders.

The two large tubes, one of which is the ocillator tube are Fender Special Design and a Magnavox 5Y3GT that has much lettering rubbed off. Can I just get two replacement 5Y3GT and a matched set of EH or Sovtek power tubes?

And what the hell is a "cap job"?
