<a href="www.bottlehead.com">This place</a> has
a stereo tube preamp kit for a pretty reasonable
price. It's a hi-fi line preamp, not a mic preamp,
but I wonder if it could be modded to be one without too much trouble, or if it could be used
in series after, e.g. a mackie preamp to add
character. Comments?

Regarding building a tube mic pre, I would probably have tried:
http://www.tangible-technology.com/tubes/altec.html

FREE SCHEMATICS can also be found here:
http://nanaimo.ark.com/~pat/
1. THE FABULOUS... TUBE HI FI PRE-AMP!!!! - a line level amp.
2. MAKE YOUR OWN....BALANCED MIC PREAMP!
3. MAKE THE EXCELLENT HEADPHONE AMP -
similar to no 1.
You will need two of each of these for stereo.
There is also:
MAKE THE EASY POWER SUPPLY!! (for 1, 2 and 3).

I visited this site with some enthusiasm, but it was lessened as I found out that these "kits" are incomplete. You have to build your own power supply and figure out how all the pieces fit together, how to wire up the ins and outs, etc. As much as I would be into purchasing and building one of these, I lack enough knowledge to make it difficult if not impossible.

I have built a high voltage tube amp from Allenamps, and I have built a number of PAIA kits, which were sucessful and great learning experiences. Those had instructions and step by step building procedures. These seem to have parts and a schematic--thats it. Unless I read it wrong, I'd be crazy to even attempt to build one of these--though I would sure like to! I really would.
