Trouble hooking things up...

I've had my mixer (Behringer Eurorack MX2642A) for a couple of years now and I'll be honest with you, I've never really understood it. With my old computer, I ran the wires from my soundcard (Audiophil 2496) to the mixer in such a way that allowed me to record sound and play back sound, but I've never understood why which wire goes where and why! In addition to that, for some reason basic functionality on the mixer (such as the decibel meter) have never worked. However, I've always just been happy with the ability to record and play back, without needing to know anymore about the inner workings of my mixer and soundcard.

However, now I have a new computer, and guess what? I can't get anything working! I had written which wires had gone where as such:

- Soundcard: Analog INS (left and right) --> Mixer: 2 Track input (left and right)
- Mixer: Main mix inserts and outs (left and right) --> Soundcard: Analog OUTS (left and right)

I hope that makes sense...I also have my moniter speakers hooked up to "Ctrl Rm" left and right. I really have no idea what I'm doing wrong, obviously because I have little to no knowledge of how mixers are supposed to be hooked up to computers! I'm assuming it's a problem with how things are wired up, because I'm pretty sure the soundcard is installed ok. I currently have the "M-Audio Delta AP 1/2" selected for sound playback and sound recording in the control panel.

At the moment I cannot record or play back sound. I'd be very grateful if any of you could help me to fix my problem, or at least nudge me in the right direction!

The manual for my mixer can be downloaded here: http://www.behringerdownload.de/MX2...A_ENG_Rev_E.zip

The manual for my soundcard can be downloaded here: http://www.m-audio.com/images/globa...2496_Manual.pdf

Here's hoping you can help me!

Cheers

Am I reading this right... cos it looks like you're connecting your sound card inputs to your mixer input and your mixer outputs to your card outputs (don't understand you usage of the inserts).

any chance of a sketch?

neither of those links work for me BTW

As Synkrotron says, it sounds very much like you have a wiring problem.

Try this:
Main mix outputs (left and right) into soundcard analog in (left and right).
Soundcard analog outputs (left and right) into mixer '2 trk'* input
Switch the control room source to '2 trk'.

* this may say something like CD input, or 'CD/Tape' input.

Thanks for the replies!

Got the wires hooked up in the right order now (as you described). I've hit the button labelled "2tk to ctrl room" and left the button labelled "2tk to mix" unpressed.

Still no sound though unfortunately! And still no sound being recorded...i.e. I hear no song when I play one on iTunes or WMP, and when I try to record something in nTrack, nothing registers on the meters.

The soundcard I have selected in the control panel is "M-Audio Delta AP 1/2" both for sound playback and sound recording. I have the option of that, "M-Audio Delta AP Multi", or "M-Audio Delta AP S/PDIF". Pretty sure the last one is for MIDI right?

So now that it's not the wiring that's the problem, I must be doing something wrong between the soundcard and the computer I'm guessing. Any ideas?

Cheers

P.S. these links should work for the manuals:

Mixer:

Soundcard:

Through some trial and error I think I've got things working ok! I've set the playback soundcard to "M-Audio Delta AP Multi" and now have playback! So that's that sorted.

I also am able to record, although the sound level seems extraordinarily low...on the mixer I've got the main mix at 0db, and the input fader at 0db too, as well as having the "main mix" button pressed on the input I'm using. The playback is very, very quiet. Any ideas why?

At least it's working though eh!
