Totally dependent on... Everything. The mic, the vocalist, the song, the arrangement, positioning, lead/backing vox, the room...

The best starting point is "ON."

Get someone to make some noise while you fiddle with the controls - After thoroughly reading the manual, of course.

And keep in mind that just because something is available (compression, limiting, etc.), it doesn't neccessarily need to be used all the time - Or at all.

Listen, and do what the source is asking for.

Hey Deneil.

I use both the trackmaster and the penta and they do sound good...nice choice!

Massive is right. There is so much variation in what is needed it's impossible to give excact figures. If you are tracking into a DAW then I'd say er on the side of caution and use it sparingly just to take of the peaks. I usually only use a a 2:1 type ratio.

You can get pretty fantastic results out of that gadget do some experimenting.

Theses are some great pages on compression.

... Just remember these are just guidelines remember to use your ears!

I used the voicemaster pro myself.. and the best advice I can give you is to use nothing but the low-cut filter, compressor, deesser and MAYBE very light EQ during tracking. All the other bells and whistles don't work too well in my opinion. (ie: vintage harmonics & gate). The trick is to get each section to work lightly, meaning your pre shouldnt be lighting up like a christmas tree.. lol. Trust me.. you'll find a sweet spot eventually.

Experiment brutha'!

Record diff vox tracks by using a wide variety of settings until you find the sound you like!
