Too much bass on mixdown?

Ok, I'm a newbie at all this stuff here, so please bear with me...

Basically when I'm mixing down some tracks to test out on "real" listening systems (stereo, walkman, whatever) I always end up with too much bass... even though it sounds completely flat when i'm mixing down.
So much bass that it rumbles the hell out of my stereo and drowns out the other instruments...

I've tried cutting the low EQ on most of the tracks with prominent bass, but that still doesn't help... it makes it sound really crappy.

As far as I can tell the tracks were recorded as pure as possible (minimal effects in the chain, minimal Amp EQing, direct in when possible)

I'm mixing down from a Tascam 424mkII to my PC using a SoundBlaster Live.
I've checked as many of the settings of the Soundblaster that I could find, and nothing seems to be helping...
(I suspect it might be the Soundcard, if anyone knows if there are any hidden bass boost or loudness settings please share them!)

Please, if the answer is obvious, well flame on...
