tips for recording guitar with distortion

Others more knowledgeable than me (and there are many :D) can hopefully add/correct... but...

As I understand it, a main reason for this is to minimize early reflections from the floor into the mic. Other reasons are that the floor (especially if you have something like hardwood) could resonate or maybe create some bad rumbling or buzzing at certain frequencies.
 
Same reason you don't put it in a corner & same reason you don't put your studio monitors in a corner - can't explain the technical aspects of it but proximity to surfaces really boosts the bass - something to do with surfaces reflecting lower frequencies better than high ones perhaps.

I always put mine on a milk crate or chair.
