This is off John Mayer's second album, song entitled Only Heart. Just wondering how he gets that sound in the left channel.

Sounds like a hollow body electric with single coil pickups.

Can someone tell me what they think it is, because I dig that tone. I think that alot of it comes from the compression, but I'm curious.

 
Sounds more to me like the pickups in his new signature Strat.

Ive been playing with these guitars lately, and the pickups have a really scooped out sound, much like I hear in that recording. My guess is its the neck/mid position on one of those thru a small tube amp.

I read an interview where he said he pretty much stuck with his Strat for the album, so that's probably it. He did use a PRS hollowbody for "The Wheel", though. (It doesn't sound that different to me, though)
