The official "I love P-90s" thread...

I started playing electric guitar back in the 80s when shreding was king and humbuckers were also king. I know humbuckers are still very popular but ever since i got my faded les paul jr DC ive fell in love with the P-90 sound!

I almost never pick up my black SG standard anymore. The HBs just dont have the bite, awesome tone and power of the P-90s IMO. I play out of a Gibson Goldtone GA-5 and a Blues Jr and the only guitar that sounds awesome on both is the P-90 equiped LP jr. My strat and tele just dont have the balls that the P90s have. The neck posituon P90 just sounds so awesome on my blues Jr for Bluesy stuff.

Ive been seriously thinking about selling my SG standard and buying the SG classic from musicians friend with the duel P90s.

Does anyone here have that one? Can anyone suggest any other cool P90 guitar?

All I can say is 'excellent choice' on both counts. Of course, when you get the SG, you won't need that clunky old jr anymore, will you? ;)

actually the Les paul jr that i have is a 2004 model faded yellow that i got new for $699! what a great deal that was:)

I've played both hum buckers and Fender/Fender-like single coils. How does the P90 fit/compare to these?

Does the P90 have more windings or something? An out-of-the-ballpark resistance? How does the sound differ?

to me the P90 has more of a single coil sound with the BALLS of a humbucker. lots of character.

damn you guys, I just got a Gibson SG standard, then in the other thread someone reminded me about the Godin LG p90, and now this thread... AAH I'm going to have to get another guitar soon if you keep up with this p90 talk.

It really never ends does it.....you need a 54 reissue Les Paul ! I can't help it either ;)

A few questions

Hi folks,

Question one: How does the SG Classic as sold by MF compare with the Pete Townsend Signature (production NOT custom shop). I have some experience with the Pete but have never played the Classic.

Question two: Anyone have any experience with these inexpensive knockoffs (or any others worth noting)

Question three: I have an old beater/player (special/slab body type) Gibson LP that used to have P90s but was converted to hums by a previous owner. If I were to convert this back, do you have any pickup suggestions? Would it be best to stick to Gibsons or is there something I should consider.

Question four: How hard should I kick myself for selling my 1960s vintage SG Junior about 8-10 years ago...

Thanks,
S

I've got a Gibby Les Paul Melody Maker in the Satin Cherry, and I love the thing to death. I don't know what kinda wood this Spanish Cedar/Santa Maria is (although it sounds pretty catholic :p ) I hope its a good wood. Anyone know more about it? The P90 bite is great for reggae/ska, and I can even muster out some nice hardcore breakdowns with it's bite.

All I need now is a nice tube amp, (don't ge me wrong I love my Vox Pathfinder 15R to death) and I'm set.

Yeah, I picked up an SG "Classic" a while back.

Cheaper grade of import hardware plus the usual awful, crude Gibson build and QC, but mine wasn't as bad as most of the others I know about. MSRP on this is pretty inflated. I got mine on sale for $599.99 (delivered) from AMS and that's about what it's worth.

Aside from that, it's a very good-sounding axe. All the people I know who have them have the identical opinion: Rough as a cob, but sounds fine. The neck is quite large, however. Be warned on that. Mine's fat enough that I don't play it much. There's also the usual unbalanced SG neck-dive if that bothers you.

Epiphone Casino- works for me. I used to have an old Gibsin thin hollow body with one dog-eared P90. I like P90's also, but I'm different. I don't use distortion of any kind, 99% of the time.-Richie
