The New Tone Thread

Former racer. Chose having kids and raising them over my need for speed. There was never gonna be any money in the racing I was doing - open wheel single seaters on road courses - and I was too old for Formula 1 or Indy and too young and poor to have that as a hobby.

Steen said where my comment came from. I guess I assumed you saw my edit. My bad. I don't know how much I will contribute here or elsewhere. I am on an extended sabbatical from playing so no output at the moment.

I gotta go gig but I'll send you some of wifey's stuff ..... I think you'll find it interesting

A Game For One Player.

Here's my most recent to keep the ball rolling in the Tone Thread.
I've tried to remove some fizz from the open chord guitar as suggested by Greg.
No solo or singer yet though I do have the lyrics (see below).
How's the tone & guitar balance chaps?

A game for one player

8 bar Intro then…
At the death of a word
That no one has said
A condemned man’s plea
His last meal been fed
An act of contrition
By sinners long gone
Words without meaning
That cannot be undone

Bottled tears of brothel queens
Finding love in magazines
Pornographic valentines
In games of love no one can play

In a tissue of lies
The truths still untold
Ten signs of longing
For a love now gone cold
Litany denial
In lies so long written
No easy comfort
For those that were smitten.

Bleeding jester’s morbid mirth
Death triumphant at each birth
Borrowed words of little worth
In games of love no one can play

Solo in verse

Newborn, stillborn bleeding heart
Morning: evening’s dying art
In all these we play no part
In games of love no one can play

The close of a sentence
Diagnosed in the dark
Comes to an end with
A punctuation mark
Cut open the morning
Tear into the light
Before it reveals
A swollen appetite

It sounds really good ray. Everything has great tone on it and a good balance, except the guitar on the right. It sounds a bit fizzy. You could back off the gain and that might help. I don't really think the problems with too much gain though, I think it could be smoothed out with some EQ. Maybe a cut somewhere in the 2000 to 4000 frequency range. Sorry but I'm not really good at pinpointing exact frequencies without being able to listen to it while sweeping it with an EQ. It has a hot frequency right where the fizziness lies. Cut that frequency and it would be more transparent and less in your face and I think you'd be good to go.
Great tune by the way ray!

Sounds good to me. The aforementioned fizziness doesnt really bother me actually but that guitar on the left sounds great in comparison.

Here's one I've been working on. I just brought the levels to the approximate appropriate volumes. I haven't done a lot with any processing or EQ. The only thing I've done to the drums is EQ the bass drum. Also I hi-passed the guitars and vocals.

The rhythm guitar panned to the left is my 66 strat, neck pickup, into the Peavey Bravo amp clean Channel

The accent rhythm guitar panned to the right, is my clown burst Les Paul copy, middle position, going into the Bravo's clean Channel

The lead guitar that intros the song and plays throughout the first ride is my clown burst, neck pickup, going into the Peavey Bravo gain channel

On the second ride, the thinner sounding guitar is my 66 Strat into the Bravo's gain channel in the middle pick up position. I realize it sounds thin but I set it more for playing the guitar harmonies than I did for a stand alone tone....I need to adjust that.

I'm playing all the instruments on this one. The drums aren't perfect but I'm happier with these drums and any others I've done so far.

This playing all the drums at at the same time stuff is a bitch!
lol

This sounds good man, everything sounds good to me. Some things mix wise I think could be better but all the base tones are there and the playing is good too. I wish I could do stuff like this on guitar, I just never learned. It really does sound like a live recording!

Jimi, you should participate with us in the monthly drum challenge at a&a, the thread is in the collaboration section. Each month we pick a song with no drums and write and record parts for it then we all post on the same day as to not influence each others ideas or playing. Its pretty fun, we've been doing it for over a year now and cover a few different styles. Only Cyrokk, Dross and myself participate, it'd be cool to have another on board. This month we are doing a Jaimee Harris song, its due next Saturday.

sounds good and rocking to me.
I don't hear too much fizz and to be honest, as much as I hate fizz, more and more I'm hearing it in amps .... never really noticed it before.
But when modelers came around their excessive fizz really made me pretty sensitive to it.

So I'm not totally sure how much fizz is too much. Even great amps have a bit of it.

To my ears you have it well controlled ..... sounds good and solid man.

it sounds like fun....I'm not really advanced enough on the drums though man. I realize that "southbound" sounds pretty good....but I LITERALLY had to play it almost all day long, one take after another after another, to get all the way through it on a keeper.

Thanks liv. I haven't mixed it yet. It's just raw tracks. I may take another swing at the guitar solos before I dive in to mixing it.

I was hoping Greg might help me on EQing the drums on my latest post. Guess I was a day late and a dollar short for that.

Just wondering, how long is Greg banned this time, I never read/heard how long it was for???

Heya Miner, hope things are going well for you!

What I read was that it was a permanent ban. From the way the mods were talking, they did Greg in for good this time. Total fucking bullshit, if you ask me.

Wow man, did any of the mods say why he was banned, or what his offense was??? I'm pretty shocked to be honest, I know he rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way here at times, but there's no denying his contributions not only to the tone thread, but the forum in general...

Thanks for asking about me, I'm ok Tad, been feeling like shit the last while, & battling depression tooth/nail, but I'm alive, I guess it can always be worse....

nah .... they didn't have a real reason ..... I started a thread about it and they stumbled all over themselves trying to come up with a reason. It was kind of a "it depends on what 'is' is" explanation.

Anyways .... up to us to keep the thread going .... and greg's actually gonna post stuff via a proxy .... ME! ..... :)

I'm not sure if he can see this forum or not as a guest. I know he can see Primetime so it may be a matter of me relaying his responses.

And the rest of us'll step up our game ..... it'll be interesting.

Keep your chin up Miner.
It's a cyclical thing and if you can ride it out you'll surface for clean air. Are you allowed to up meds in heavy parts of the cycle?
This will sound silly, but if you can stomach it eat beetroot, even the canned kind, with at least 1 meal a day. Does natural serotonin connection stuff - known and approved my Psychs -my wife has it with each evening meal & it does make a diff. I always keep it in stock.
Doing some light gardening is also high on the + list - working out even more so IF you're able.
I had an email convo with Greg & he's miffed at the lack of transparency/truth but is otherwise well.
