On an un-bound neck....it is possible to drive the frets out sideways, however you do stand a chance of really mucking things up should your driver slip off the fret and land in the fretboard when striking......best to buy a set of fret pullers and then repair the chips!

hmm... with soap?
boiling them works, but ruins the coating so they dont last as long.
