What is the best way to record heavy, chunky, distorted guitars using:

sennheiser e609 > Really Nice Preamp > Really Nice Compressor > Digitech DIGI 001.

I am having a tough time getting the guitars to be bright yet think and chunky.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have a krank setup, loud as hell. But the guitars sound either to piercing (listening fatigue) or too muffled. I have the mic placed directly in front of the cone about 2-3 inches away.

Put on a pair of headphones and play with mic positioning. Sometimes where the cone meets the dust cap is a good location. You can also try removing the grill to get the mic closer. I'd leave the compressor out of your signal chain. If you can't get a sound you like still, start tweaking your amp settings and position of the cabinet in the room. If you have another mic available (preferably a large or medium diaphragm condenser) you can try positioning it back about 3 ft and blending the two. Good luck.
