Tell me about Altec Salt Shakers

I saw some used ones on Craig's list. Some searching resulted in several model numbers in the 600 range.

I'm always on the lookout for the next doohickey I can't live without. Any opinions about these mics?

I suppose they are worth their salt in any studio.

I don't think there exists a used moving-coil dynamic microphone that's worth $600 to me. Maybe to a collector.

i think the 600 was a model#... no??? if you can snag'em for next to nuthin why not???? they aint all that much as i remember them.... maybe good for live harp???

I was unclear earlier, the model numbers are in the 600 range, not the price. I've seen mentions of models 633A, 633C, and 639B.

vintage altecs

Hi,

These are Vintage Collectible mics. The 633s are omnis. (Kind of. Take the link.) Many sound engineers used them a lot in another era. Kind of their "go to omni".

Altec and Western Electric used to be the same company. The Altec 633a and Western Electric 633a are the same mics. (According to what I've read)

The 639a and 639b are multi pattern ribbons.

I checked into the 633s and I couldn't afford one. So I can't testify as to their sound. I do think this is a case where the collectors market values the mics higher than their current utility.

If you get a chance to pick one up for $50 to $100 you can play with it and then resell it for a profit if you don't like it.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

639B has a ribbon and a dynamic element, from what I understand (yes, I know a ribbon is technically a dynamic...you know what I mean).
