Tascam 564 unresponsive Menu and song select button

I bought a 564 off Ebay about 8 years ago and stuck it in the loft. Finally I get it down to play with and discover that it may not be fully functional. It plays the 2 track music on my old discs fine but when I press the menu button so I can erase the disc and turn it into a 4 track disc the menu button is totally unresponsive. The repeat, pitch cont and jog buttons seems to work fine so I'm hoping the buttons are not responding for some as yet unascertained reason. Seems like asking a question about this unti in 2014 might be asking a bit much but I thought I'd try...

Are you using MDD minidisc data discs? They are required for 4-track recording. The 564 will record and play back in stereo to standard MD discs. The MD music disc and MDD data discs are different formats.
