tascam 246 - Problem or feature?

I noticed that when i put a tape in my 246 (with the tape stopped) the 246 makes some small noise, and i oppened it and saw that when a tape is inserted the capstan start rolling even when the tape is not playing. Is this normal or there is something wrong. If this is a problem, do you know what should i fix?

By the way i bought this 246 for €25 ~ 30 USD. Cheap, wasn´t it?

That noise, when you insert a cassette, is the capstan motor, which in turn, by way of the flat rubber belt, spins the large grey flywheel and thus the capstan shaft inside the cassette compartment. Yes, Luis, that is NORMAL for the 246. This is NOT a problem.

$30 is a super deal!

I´m very happy with my purchase. The only problem it has is the tape windows/plastic broken.. oh and the belts needed to be replaced!

By the way do you have the 246 manual scanned?

Yes, you definitely should change the belts.
