tape deck ground?

A few things, I can get a good sounding recording of clean guitar, but distortion sounds horrible on my Teac A-160. On the back, there is a ground wire coming out (well the wire use to be there, I can reattach it of course). My question is though, where would i hook this wire at? Can I just ground it anywhere in my room? or to my amp? and would recording sound better if I grounded it?!

Distortion is not caused by the lack (or by) a ground. Distortion is typically caused by over driving an amplifier. So what levels are you sending to the deck?

Line in into a mic input will cause problems.

Grounds should all go to a single common point (in ac/mains or to a signal ground). With an improper ground you would get a lot of line/mains hum.
