I'm new to home recording. I'm in the market for a decent studio monitor that doesn't cost a fortune. Can anyone please tell me or recomend a starter but quality studio monitor? Plus I would like to know the difference between passive and active monitors. My budget for a new monitor is $200. Thank you.

Flailing up a storm.
Take a look through the "other equipment" forum. There are a ton of threads on this very topic. I have Wharfedale 8.2a (a = active, priced between $250-$350 for used->new) and like them well enough, although i don't personnally have a great deal of experience with different monitors. There are at least 3-4 brands/models of cheap ($200-$300) monitors out there that are considered at least decent for the price.
