Sound glitchy when I go to record?

Hey guys I'm hoping you could help me out with this issue I am having.

I have a mic plugged into my audio interface (M-Audio Fast Track) and a PA plugged into the headphone jack of the interface.
I can hear the mic coming through the PA and everything is clear.
Now, if I have a track in my DAW (Reaper and/or Studio One) and I ready the track to record then the sound instantly because transformed into a glitchy mess.
Tons of pops, crackles and distortion; completely unusable.
And again will disappear when I disarm the recording on that track.

I'm stumped, anyone have any ideas??

I've also removed the audio interface and it's the same thing when going through my internal laptop mic and laptop speakers

So the input signal is messed up by just arming the track (nothing playing? Or is it playback of the recorded track?

It was just from arming the track.
I figured it out - I had my buffer set too small, thanks for the input
