Hi all,
Am selling Sony’s first ever 4-track Minidisc based recorder, the MDM-X4. It was purchased around 1997 and has been kept in very good condition. It hasn’t been used for the past 8 years except occasionally as a mixer. It takes special Data Minidiscs.

Given its age, the recorder is in great condition with the exception of a destroyed headphone socket. Headphones do not sit comfortably in the input socket and the plastic around it has been chipped away. This is something that a decent repairman should be able to fix. If not using headphones, the sound can be routed to one of the outputs and played back that way.

Feature’s a two-prong plug but is fine for use in the UK. It was purchased that way in London.

OPERATING MANUAL IS FREELY AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD ONLINE. See:

LOCAL PICKUP PREFERABLE. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL WITH ANY QUESTIONS OR TO SEE PICS.

July 12, 1996 -- Strengthening its position as an emerging leader in the musical instrument (MI) market by addressing the needs of musicians and project studios, Sony Electronics' Professional Audio Group has introduced the MDM-X4 MiniDisc Multitrack Recorder. Designed to provide working musicians maximum flexibility at home or in the studio, the MDM-X4 utilizes the MD-DATA format, as well as Sony's advanced ATRAC technology, to offer 4-channel recording and playback (up to 37 minutes per track). In addition, the use of the MiniDisc format offers musicians a significant advantage over existing tape-based units by providing features such as digital sound, advanced editing capabilities and instant access.

"The MDM-X4 was created by musicians for musicians," said Courtney Spencer, vice president of professional audio products for Sony Electronics. "With the MDM-X4, musicians can spend more time being creative and less time worrying about the recording technology they are using. The use of MD technology results in an extremely high-quality digital recording system with random-access capability as well as several editing functions."

Editing features include Song Edit, which allows for song-based editing, and Track Edit, which allows for various digital editing between tracks. The Virtual Mix function enables the MDM-X4 to be used to actually record more than 4 tracks on the disk. Various recording modes are available: 4 channels at 37 minutes, 2 channels at 74 minutes and Mono at 148 minutes. Facilitating the unit's operation is a Jog/Shuttle feature and +/- 8.8% VARI Speed Control capability. The availability of MMC (MIDI Machine Control) and MTC (MIDI Time Code) allows the MDM-X4 to be synchronized to other MIDI devices, and external control of the unit is possible by assignable pedal. The mixing features of the MDM-X4 include 10 inputs: MIC/Line x 4, Stereo x 1, and AUX Return (ST) x 2. Two AUX sends are also available.

The MDM-X4 will begin shipping in November 1996 at a suggested list price of $1,250.
