Song (file) sizes on VS-1680

I recorded one of our live gigs on my VS-1680, and let the recorder run for about an hour and ended up with a file of just over 1 Gbyte. My one recording of 8 tracks (unmixed) contains 20 numbers. My intention is to split the recording into 20 separate songs, each containing 8 tracks (still unmixed), so that I can then work on each song separately.

What I'm finding is that if I split the original song into four pieces, each containing five songs, and then copy and trim (cutting unwanted portions) each piece in turn, the final size of each song is radically different than I would have expected - e.g. one 4 min song ends up being 360 Mbytes (!!!) - this, despite the fact that after I trim the unwanted parts of the tracks I make sure that each song is "optimised". At this rate, I'm going to need vastly more disk space for the 20 separate songs, than was used in the original song (containing 20 numbers). Surely there is something wrong here?

Anyone else had similar problems? What is going on here?
