Software Recording Difference

Would the actual sound be different if i recorded the same audio in different programs?

I'm running a DBX 386 preamp with s/pdif out into an m-audio something or other sound card (forgot the name right now)

Right now i'm recording in cool edit pro 2.0, and i had a person at guitar center say that i can't handle the asapi drivers as well as other programs, and i'm wondering if that would make a difference in sound?

i'm not too versed in soundcard drivers, but it's my impression that using different drivers will not change the sound quality. but what they could change is your latency.
