Sm57 For Recording Kick Drum

I had a ongoing pursuit of getting a good clean recording of my kick drum.I have a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Kit.A 22 inch kick drum.I don't like to EQ too much.I have a EV-RE20,which is good for most kits. However I have found the RE-20 to be too muddy.Rather than retuning the drum.I changed mics to the SM57.I get such a punchy good sounding kick drum.!!Most drummers like the large diaphram mics on the kicks.Myself also. But the SM57 works just as well.A person can spend $120-$450 on a kick drum mic.Or pay $80 for the SM57 and get a real good kick drum sound. But I just wandered if anyone else had this experience.Happy Recording!!!.For the record.I'm a recording engineer/producer,not a drummer.

ROCKNROLLRUSS,
I agree with you. Last week we did just the thing. We had it about a foot away from the lower half of the kick, pointing at it and it sounded pretty good. I don't think I even eq'd it. That with two condenser overheads got a really great drumkit sound.
It had a real live sound to it.
