Just grabbed a Symetrix 565E, dual expander gate with comp/limit, nice led readout with gain. Handles Balanced and/or Unbalanced.
Mic to Channel Strip to expander/gate to interface....noisy room becomes pretty quiet. $150 for a dual channel. I've had the 528E a few times, great piece, well built.
565E same "blue line". ..for those not wanting to always be on the mouse, some outboard gear can work.
