Setting gain on snare mic with rim shots

Ok, somewhat inspired by the rim shot topic.

Ive been wondering, for those drummers who use rim shots as sparse accents as opposed to using them as a normal hit, how do you set the gain on the snare mic? Because if you set it while the drummer isnt doing rim shots, when he does hit a rim shot, its obviously gonna peak. But if you do set it to him hitting rim shots, all the other hits are going to much quieter....

Ive been kinda confused about this for a while, any insight would be appreciated.

At 24 bit, you don't have to worry about it.

If you are freaking out about it, set a compressor on the way in.

Set it so the rimshots peak at about -4dbfs. Then just deal with it in the mix with the normal compression that you would use on the snare.
