would someone be so kind as to explain to me what the differences between series and parallel wiring schems are, and if there is any difference in these on a performance basis.

In the world of speakers, series and parallel wiring scemes are only to be able to wire an array of speakers in such a way as to match their total impedence load to the load that the amplifier wants to see. How you wire depends on the impedence of the speakers in question and what load the amp to drive them wants to operate at.
 
In the world of guitar pickups, it's a different story. Here it really gives a different sound, and you can end up with pretty complex schematics.

It's mostly used with humbuckers, which are actually two single coils in one package. Normally they would me in series, which gives a higher output. Parallel gives less output but much clear sound, closer to sounding like a single coil pick-up.
