Separation .

When mixing down vocals, drums, bass and guitar, are there any tricks to use to get good separation in the final mix? I'll be using a Tascam 1/2" reel to reel. The tracks will be....trk 1-vocal, trk2-vocal, trk3-bass guitar, trk4-guitar, trk5-overheads, trk6-toms, trk7-kick, trk8-snare.

You achieve separation when tracking. On remix, all you can do is auto-mute, gate, or spot erase to eliminate bleed during any gaps into a given track. Sometimes these work but not always.

The issue you are going to have is there is very little you can really do to create a stereo mix with what you have. You only have one of everything and most of that needs to live in the center.
You might be a little better off if you had stereo overheads and Tom's mixed down on two tracks that you can pan. That will get a sense of space.

Another idea would be to put the Tom's and overhead on one track and add another guitar track so you can pan the guitars.
