Scratchy MP3 quality

Howyadoin,

I've been trying to use MP3 files to send intermediate mixes to clients for comments and whatnot. I find the sound quality on higher-frequency sounds like hi-hat and sibilance in vocals very scratchy, like there's clipping taking place. The CDs that are ripped to MP3 were burned from the original mixdown WAVs out of Cubase SX, and neither the WAVs nor the CD tracks have any scratchiness/clipping/whatever on playback. Even when ripped at 320 Kbps, and even when ripped from the source WAVs on the hard disc, the problem still exists.

I'm using CDEx V1.50 beta 7, Lame encoder version 1.30 engine 3.92MMX. I'm listening to playback on Winamp.

Any ideas? I realize MP3 is a lossy format, but I'm used to hearing better quality in rips of commercial CDs, even at 128Kbps...
