SB Audigy 2 Platinum EX

I will 1st off say that I am NOT getting this soundcard, I'm sticking with the Audiophile 2496. Figure to go ahead and address that now before some of you all get worried. I was hoping maybe you tech heads could point out if this card is just another gamer card from SB OR could it be possible that SB is catching up with current pro level cards. Here is the link in case you all are wondering:

I was talking to a buddy of mine who's putting together his own PC to record music on. This will really be just a demo/idea budget machine rather than a serious recording machine (he's definitely not spending a whole lot on this machine...maybe a couple hundred bucks or so). And sure enough for the soundcard, he's picking this thing. I looked at it today and I was kind of amazed from all the I/O and the fact that it actually does 24 bit recording and playback. So anyways, is this another hunk of junk gamer card or is this a serious alternative to the Audiophile (both the Audiophile and this SB card cost about the same)?

I guess you missed the fine print - it only works with 16bit/48Khz audio with using ASIO drivers because it is not ASIO 2.0 compliant.

Hardware specs are only half the story. Creative's drivers/support are dissapointing to say the least.

Taken from the link provided:

"ASIO 2.0 drivers for low latency (as low as 2ms) multi-track playback and recording at 16-bit/48kHz or 24-bit/96kHz."

So it appears to me like it does OR Creative is lying on their website OR perhaps this is not as obvious as what it sounds and there's more technical stuff there that I'm not understanding.

Hmmm...looks like they re-worked the product and didn't make a big deal about it...

...I take that back - the plain jane Audigy 2 still doesn't have ASIO 2.0 support:

http://www.soundblaster.com/products/audigy2/specs.asp

"High Definition Audio Quality for Playback and Recording
-24-bit Digital-to-Analog conversion during playback with sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz in 5.1 mode and up to 192kHz in stereo mode
-24-bit Analog to Digital conversion during recording in 8, 16 or 24-bit at sampling rates of 8, 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 and 96kHz
-SPDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) input at up to 24-bit/ 96kHz quality
-SPDIF output up to 24-bit at 48 or 96kHz
-ASIO drivers for low latency (=2ms) multi-track playback and recording at 16-bit/48kHz)

With the Audigy 2 around $100 and the eX around $170, the Audiophile still is a better value at $150.

I see...yeah like I said, I'm getting the Audiophile, I'm steering clear of SB. I saw the Audigy 2 Plat. EX and the specs got me wondering...sort of like asking myself, "has Creative actually taken the step towards a more pro level soundcard or is something amiss?" I think the only thing that has got me from answering that question would be the quality of the AD/DA converters. But I don't know enough about that sort of thing to answer it. I was hoping maybe somewhere here could b/c everything else "appears" to be in place in terms of pro level quality. What next, Pro Tools lowering prices to Ntrack's pricerange? :p  :D

You are confusing the two Sound Cards, the link that Basslord refered to is for the audigy 2 platinum ex and the one that you refered to is for the Audigy 2:

Here are the links of the specification sheet for the two sound cards:

Audigy 2:
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/audigy2/specs.asp

Audigy 2 platinum ex:
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/audigy2_platinum_ex/specs.asp

The Audigy 2 platinum EX supports ASIO 2.0 and recording 24-bit/96kHz, the Audigy 2 not.

My best intention here is just trying to clear this confusion about the two Audigy products

cheers

I was aware of that and my link refers to the regular Audigy 2. The point was that not all Audigy 2 cards support 24bit recording with ASIO drivers.

The other point was that even though the A2P-EX supports 24bit audio, it is more expensive than a Audiophile.
