Here's a question: How would somebody go about mixing a surround sound mix either on music or for a video sound track? Presumably you need dedicated equipment but does anyone know what or how much it would cost? Im mostly just curious but cant help thinking how cool a surround sound mix on the family home videos would be........

Sound Forge

Sound Forge has a surround add on to their software. If I am not mistaken, it runs around a grand.

To be honest I expected it to be more expensive than that. Can anyone shed any light on how the process works? Presumably the surround sound signal gets encoded somehow on a normal stereo audio track (i.e. left and right tracks on a video tape or whatever)??

You should get a copy of October's Electronic Musician. The cover article is about surround mixing, and it gets into much more detail then anyone would want to post.:)
