Does anyone know an Affordable way to capture 96Khz 24bit sampling it down to 44.1 16?

Would this work?

Running the out of my sound card into the analog in puts of my sony DAT and recording the master onto a DAT?
 
That would work but wouldn't be the way I'd choose. Lots of programs out there that'll re-sample and and change bit depth. WaveLab, SoundForge, just about any decent editor.
