sample clearance

Hi all,

I wonder if you can give me some advice on the following:
I make music that's heavily based on samples from both known und unknown
movies. None of my songs has been commercialized uptil now, but I if they
ever would, I understand I need to get clearance for the used samples.
Anyone any idea on how to go about this? When should I start worrying about
getting sued: one word, a whole sentence, ...?
Secondly: suppose I get signed, would the record company take care of the
sample clearance for me?

Time to worry = anytime you get a check.

If you even think about doing something for money you should plan ahead and use free samples. If you're going to use someone else's work you merely have to contact the owner listed on the sample CD (and get out your wallet!)

I think Tim has a point: though I have plenty of records by people who use samples constantly, the strain of getting them cleared might be too big. A pitty though, there are plenty of good sounds out there...

My only hope would be to use samples which wouldn't be recognized.
That raises another question: what about samples that would be rendered unrecognizable? For instance pitchshifting a sentence so the original doen't come to mind immediately? Tricky?
