S&M -- what do you think about this mixing/recording?

Ummmmm.... I don't know what this kind of music is supposed to sound like...
Kind of sounds like when years ago I used to bring my ghetto blaster to a jam session, and just put it on the floor and hit record... The vocal is almost inaudible, that unidentifiable flanger-saturated sound at the beginning is very overpowering. Really sounds like nothing is close miked, just like a couple of overheads or something.
Of course, I don't really listen to any industrial-trance-hard core stuff, maybe it's supposed to sound like that. Hmmm...

Vocals need to come WAY up.
Also, is the lead singer supposed to sing off-key like that?
Drums sound decent. Guitar solo was happening too.
Not my cup of tea musically. I am VERY anti-rap and anti-non-melodic vocals and permanently anti-flat vocals too.

Nice tune. And close enough to mainstream to make it marketable.
I'd ease off on those effects and get a little more verb on those drums. They were recorded pretty dry.
The effects worked, but would work better in moderation.
Were the vocals recorded separately? That would aid greatly in boosting the level and clarity.

Thanks man for your help. I was in the need to listen
to different points of view (or listening). the intro flangered
guitar sound is crappy, you´re right. I´ve payed attention
to the "close mic" problem that you said and I´ve made some
new equalizing and mixing, since record everything again would
be that last decision. Please, if you have a free time, listen to
the new mix
It would be very cool if you could giving me your opinion,
if you think it´s worth, of course.

to different points of view (or listening). the intro flangered

thanks a lot for your comments. Do you think it´s close
to mainstream really? Sometimes it think it´s too dark
to be marketable. The echos on the vocals were recorded
with the orginal one because of a problem in my delay pedal.
When you say effects would work better in moderation, are
you talking specially about the vocals of the guitar effects also?
Please, listen to this new mix if you have some free time and
tell me if it got better. I´ve made some new setting over the
mix.

Hello there,
Thanks for your comments. The offkey problem is a human
problem, not technical. Maybe our idea of what band is about
is not that perfect. I´ve recorded his vocals at least 10 times,
so, that´s the best the guy could go. I was thinking about
the flat and non-melodic vocal opinion, please, it would be
very cool if you could give me 1 or 2 examples of artists singing
in this way, I´d like to listen and pay attention, to open my
ears a little bit. Thanks a lot dude.

it's not so much that it's offkey imho...it's more of a style ala perry ferrel (sp?lol)......ive heard mike patton do this too (mr bungle..faith no more)...as well as some other, lesser known singers...
i don't think anyone's ever thought perry was a great, soulful singer....he just KNOWS what to do with his voice in context with the overall sound...i've seen them (jane's) twice...in 93 or so and around '95...and he had his own effects processor (delay and such) that he controlled himself on stage as he sung...played his voice like an intrument...phucking awesome sound...
your singer has a more traditional voice and combined with the effects pulls off the sound pretty good..

wow man, I´ve very glad to know that you´ve seen
a Jane´s show. It´s just amazing. I saw Perry (alone)
here in Brazil a couple of years ago. He was doing some
techno/trance stuff. I recorded a show in MD and traded
with some people in the Jane´s fans group. I think this
song (S&M) just can´t hide we like Jane´s A LOT. My luck
is that Mauricio (the vocal guy) likes Radiohead a lot also,
so, he keeps going from one point to another, instead of
just pretending to be Perry, in his own way. In fact, Perry
used to sing in ala offkey style with a lot of class and talent.
He also knew how to use the delay effect better than anybody
else that I can remember now. I´ve notived that he started
using a foot controled unit late in the Jane´s days, so he
had all the speed/start/stop buttons on his feet, instead
of going to the rack. So, we have a lot of influence from
this musical hero. I also like Polar Bear (Eric´s band) and Deconstruction a lot.
