Rub a Dub Dub

Probably a simple question, with a simple answer, but I don't have it quite right.

What's with the echo snare sound in dub raggae? It's iconic, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. How do they get that sound? Is it an electronic trigger, or a mic with serious delay and... what else? some kind of envelope filter?

Analog delay, sometimes with modulation, sometimes delayed reverb.

Sounds like a pretty straight forward (tape) echo to me, most of the time.
